History has a way of teaching us about the future. According to the Brittanica Concise Encyclopedia “Philanthropic groups existed in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, Greece, and Rome: an endowment supported Plato's Academy (c. 387 BC) for some 900 years; the Islamic waqf (religious endowment) dates to the 7th century AD; and the medieval Christian church administered trusts for benevolent purposes. Merchants in 17th- and 18th-century Western Europe founded organizations for worthy causes. Starting in the late 19th century, large personal fortunes led to the creation of private foundations that bequeathed gifts totaling millions and then billions in support of the arts, education, medical research, public policy, social services, environmental causes, and other special interests.”
When the Foundation for Community Care was organized in 1983, the founders envisioned a community where everyone had access to local, high-quality healthcare. In over twenty years, our mission has never wavered, but instead has become even more focused on ensuring the continuance and quality of local health and medical care.
Our Community – Our Health – Our Future is a wonderful way to express the mission of the Foundation for Community Care. Because of the generosity of our donors, over 1,500 students have educational materials available to them through the DARE program, over 800 Healthwork’s members have access to equipment in helping to make lifestyle changes to increase physical activity to fight disease and other health related issues, and 10-15 patients a month receive blood transfusions quickly and safely with the new Blood Locator software at Sidney Health Center. These examples help to put faces to our donors’ generosity. 2010 brings many more opportunities to ensure the continuance of quality health care in Richland County and the surrounding area.
